The release of the Hawaii state quarters in November marked the end of the US Mint’s 10-year state quarter program.
According to the US Department of Treasury, the Coinage Act passed by Congress back in 1792 gave us our first Mint building, built in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Today, the Philadelphia and Denver Mints often produce millions of coins for circulation in just 24 hours.
Fun for all ages, the United States Mint state quarter program began in 1999 and breathed new life into the coin industry, from the serious numismatist to the pocket change collector. Latest additions to Sierra Enterprises Internet Store include the 2008 uncirculated state quarters Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii. All 50 states are now available at our website in uncirculated condition, Denver (D) and Philadelphia (P) mint marks. Plush American Coin bears representing Delaware and Tennessee are cuddly soft, each sporting an embroidered outline of their state and housing their state quarter in a protective case on the bottom of the bear’s foot. Professional Stamp Experts (PSE): Innovative stamp album! »»
An album created to make it easy to begin a satisfying collection of U.S. postage stamps is available from Professional Stamp Experts (PSE).
Newport Beach, California - Professional Stamp Experts (PSE) has created an innovative stamp album based on PSE’s acclaimed “A Guide to U.S. Design Numbers,” a simplified system for building a basic collection of United States postage stamps by major design type.
“Like the guide book, the album represents an entirely new approach to collecting U.S. stamps from 1847 to 1947. The first century of U.S. stamps is a compelling story with numerous artistic and colorful items. This album tells that story,” said Michael Sherman, President of PSE, the philatelic expertizing and certification division of Collectors Universe, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLCT).
The 74-page album is printed on acid-free paper. It contains spaces for 435 regular-issue U.S. postage stamps issued between 1847 and 1947 and intended for use on letters or parcels. Each stamp design is illustrated and includes a number that corresponds to its “USD” number listed in the U.S. Design Numbers booklet.
The booklet is available free. The album can be purchased for $35 each, postpaid, and is available with a plain left edge or with a three-hole punch.
“It is hoped that this approach will open the door for thousands of new collectors to enjoy this fascinating and time-honored hobby,” explained Sherman.
Veteran collectors have enthusiastically endorsed the ability of the PSE design numbers concept to attract new collectors and assist novices who may be confused by the huge number of complicated, nearly-identical minor varieties of U.S. stamps.
“I applaud your suggestion that collectors adopt a fresh approach to collecting 19th and early 20th century U.S. postage stamps. Your design type approach provides a rational way for collector to assemble and display their collections of early U.S. stamps and covers without getting lost in the minutiae…or getting discouraged by all those blank spaces at the front of their albums,” an Illinois collector wrote to Sherman soon after the design numbers guide became available this past summer.
A Maryland collector stated: “This is the greatest thing I have seen in a long time. I had been trying to assemble an early collection. The huge range of varieties proved so frustrating, I lost interest in the hobby…. Your book will be the answer to my quest.”
For additional information or to place an order for the album, “United States Postage Stamps by Design Type, The First Century 1847 - 1947,” contact Professional Stamp Experts, P.O. Box 6170, Newport Beach, CA 92658. Phone: (949) 567-1346.

10 Easy Steps to Avoid Being Scammed on High Value Memorabilia on Ebay »»
Kevin Conway has been buying and selling rare autographs, vintage movie posters and high value memorabilia on eBay for 10 years. Mr Conway has collected autographs for over 25 years and is considered an expert in autograph authentication for many historical and vintage Hollywood autographs. Mr Conway has also worked with eBay on more than 100 occasions trying to clean up the growing problem of fraudulent selling, such as autograph forgeries in particular. In this report he highlights some of the most important steps to follow for a safe online buying experience. Mr Conway’s web site is Conway’s Vintage Treasures, located at www.cvtreasures.comProvidence, RI (PRWEB) November 22, 2008 — It’s that time of year again. And, we’re all looking for that special gift (http://www.cvtreasures.com/), that unique Christmas gift (http://www.cvtreasures.com)that will leave an everlasting impression. So, as 90% of the population searches on the internet for gift ideas for Christmas (http://www.cvtreasures.com), keep the below steps in mind so you won’t become a victim to online fraud.
1. One of the most popular myths on eBay is “But he has Good Positive Feedback He Must be Legitimate” suggests the autograph (http://www.cvtreasures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=67), antique oil painting or original movie poster (http://www.cvtreasures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=66)is authentic? The answer - No. Many online forgers have 100% positive feedback. Why? These sellers give great customer service. They’re essentially criminals selling fake items like forged autographs. However, this type of seller sends items promptly, answer questions, and refund if the buyer discovers it is not authentic. Yet, these guys know a very small fraction of buyers will ever get their autographs or art oil paintings authenticated as these forgers prey on the inexperience of their victims. These inexperienced buyers do not know what they are buying, never mind knowing where to go to have it authenticated. Valuable collectibles like sports memorabilia (http://www.cvtreasures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=68)and vintage movie memorabilia (http://www.cvtreasures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=66)is big business and these white collar criminals know it. When Conway’s Vintage Treasures looks online for oil paintings for sale (http://www.cvtreasures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=69), they first educates themselves about the oil painting artist.
2. There is almost always a pattern. Always, check other items for sale by this seller. Many of these fraudulent memorabilia (http://www.cvtreasures.com) sellers have a pattern. For example, no one can sell an authentic Judy Garland autograph for $50, or a Guy Wiggins landscape oil painting for $500, the market won’t allow it. And, the market is made of experienced collectors. When an authentic Judy Garland autograph does appear on Ebay you will see a dramatic difference in the selling price, such as a genuine one that sold for $900 recently. Also, many of these sellers use the same type medium, i.e, same kind of paper. One particular Ebay autograph forger, who sold over 100,000 forgeries on Ebay used the same kind of paper for all his forgeries. This seller posted many of the same autographs every week. So you can see he had the “same” Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley up almost every week and it was obviously the same person manufacturing all the signatures. This deceitful individual sold about 2000 fake autographs a week until he was finally, after several years, expelled from Ebay. Unfortunately these unscrupulous characters find their way back to Ebay with new ID’s or via another seller.
3. Beware of Grossly Under-valued Sales: The online forger sells autographs and fine art oil paintings every week for a fraction of actual value. If he were selling authentic autographs he would be paying close to market value to acquire them and hence NOT be able to sell for such low final bids. However, when you are forging all the signatures the overhead is, well, about zero.
4. Another popular myth on eBay is “It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) so it must be real”. COA’s are only worth the value of the paper unless they come from a reputable source. The online forger never uses a COA from a reputable source. A seller of suspicious material will issue a COA made out by him (or her). Also, does the COA provide all contact information? Again, what is behind the COA, i.e. years in business, a location or permanent web site (not the anonymous Ebay Store), is the guarantee without time limit, professional associations he/she is affiliated with?
5. The online seller has NO affiliations with reputable organizations for the autograph industry. And, most of the time if you question this type of individual on it he/she will proceed to tell you everything bad about that organization.
6. The unethical seller cannot give you an honest source for their autograph acquisitions. Many online autograph and art forgers use the same fabricated story such as a guy from Europe who was selling an old man’s collection. So, beware of such claims. A forger cannot provide a sales history, receipt or reputable, documented source for their “autographs” because they never bought them.
7. Beware of “clipped signatures”. These are pieces of paper with so-called “autographs” on them. In particular, never buy a “high-end” autograph on a slip of paper. It is popular among forgers to forge very valuable signatures on pieces of paper like Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, and Albert Einstein just to name a few. To protect yourself from these tactics protect yourself by investing in only signed official documents. For example, if you are looking for a genuine Abraham Lincoln signature buy only official signed documents from the time period he was alive such as a Presidential Military Appointment from 1863. It is highly unlikely an autographed memorabilia (http://www.cvtreasures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=67)collector will ever see an official presidential document forged, as forgers are highly unlikely to invest in one of these pricey documents.
8. There is also a eerie consistency in the psychology and disposition of most of these autograph and fine art forgers. When they are confronted, their responses are often consistent with their criminal activity, namely defensiveness, denial and sometimes even vulgar. No snake likes to be uncovered. Ask WHO the valuable collectible was acquired from and what proof is there. Does the seller provide in writing that if proven not Authentic you will get your money back. Is contact information provided such as phone number. The right questions may reveal this typical disposition.
9. What can a buyer or collector do to insure they are buying genuine autographed collectibles (http://www.cvtreasures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=67)? Only buy from a reputable dealer, who has been in business for several years, has a physical or online store (web site), and is not hesitant to provide contact information. Ebay provides the ideal “anonymous” identity opportunity for these unscrupulous people who make a living preying on the inexperienced.
10. The dishonest like to hide. Sellers of suspiciously fraudulent material often hide their feedback, they often hide their location by inputting a vague location other then the town they live in (probably for fear of someone contacting the Attorney General’s Office). Their descriptions have very little specifics and almost never provide legitimate contact information. Also, almost all of the Ebay autograph forgers have private auctions for fear someone will contact the buyers and tip them off on the scam.
11. Bonus Step. There is a service called PSA quick opinion. This is a very inexpensive service that provides an experienced second opinion on an Ebay autograph. And, it is relatively inexpensive, $7.50 per item. They will return a “Likely Not genuine” or “Likely Genuine” result.
As more and more consumers flock to the internet this Holiday season, there are a lot of great buys online along with web sites that offer rare collectibles you can’t find anywhere else. And, by employing caution and educating yourself to some of the risks you’ll be sure to come out on top in your treasure hunting excursions.

Smurfs 50th Anniversary Plush with Sound and Collector Figure »»
The Smurfs (Les Schtroumpfs) are a fictional group of small sky blue creatures who live in Smurf Village somewhere in the woods. The Belgian cartoonist Peyo introduced Smurfs to the world in a series of comic strips, making their first appearance in the Belgian comics magazine Le Journal de Spirou on October 23, 1958. The English-speaking world perhaps knows them best through the popular 1980s animated television series from Hanna-Barbera Productions, The Smurfs.
The Smurfs storylines tend to be simple tales of bold adventure. The cast has a simple structure as well: almost all the characters look essentially alike ? mostly male, very short (just “three apples tall”[4]), with blue skin, white trousers with a hole for their short tails, white hat in the style of a Phrygian cap, and sometimes some additional accessory that identifies a personality (For instance, Handy Smurf wears overalls instead of the standard trousers, a brimmed hat, and a pencil above his ear). Smurfs can walk and run, but often move by skipping on both feet. They love to eat Sarsaparilla (a species of smilax) leaves, whose berries the smurfs naturally call smurfberries (the smurfberries appear only in the cartoon; in the original comics, the Smurfs only eat the leaves from the smilax). The male Smurfs almost never appear without their hats, which leaves a mystery amongst the fans as to whether they have hair. The animated series canon state that they may be bald: one episode of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon has Greedy Smurf removing his chef’s hat to give Papa Smurf a pie he had concealed under it, revealing a bald head. Another episode, St. Smurf and the Dragon, shows Hefty Smurf’s hat rising up off his bald head briefly as he and others slide to a stop. Both Papa Smurf and Grandpa Smurf have full beards and hair visibly coming from under their hats above the earline. In The Smurfs and the Magic Flute, a Smurf took off his hat briefly for a polite gesture.
In the comics, the last page of the first album Les Schtroumpfs noirs (The Black Smurfs) shows Papa Smurf’s hat blown off by an explosion, revealing his completely bald head (which may simply be due to old age). In Le Schtroumpfeur de Bijoux (The Jewel Smurfer), Jokey Smurf gets very angry and defensive when a human tells him he should take off his hat.
The Smurfs fulfill simple archetypes of everyday people: Lazy Smurf, Grouchy Smurf, Brainy Smurf, and so on. All smurfs with the exception of Papa, Baby, Nanny and Grandpa are said to be 100 years old. There were originally 99 smurfs, but this number increases as new Smurf characters appear, such as the smurflings and Nanny. Smurfette is not one of the original smurfs because she was created by Gargamel, the evil wizard.
The Smurfs’ community generally takes the form of a cooperative, sharing and kind environment based on the principle that each Smurf has something he or she is good at, and thus contributes it to Smurf society as he or she can. In return, each Smurf appears to be given their necessities of life, from housing and clothes to food. Some have argued that the foundation of Smurf society resembles the basic principles of Communism, although Peyo’s son, Thierry Culliford, has stated in an interview that his father “wasn’t interested in politics at all”.

Dorflinger Tankard Soars to $49,000 at American Brilliant Cut Glass Auction »»
An exceptionally rare, dark cranberry cut to clear tankard by Dorflinger, cut in the fine #99 pattern and boasting a fine embossed vintage spout with monogram ?S.V.S.? signed Tiffany & Company, with mark ?C? (for Charles C. Cook, the president of Tiffany from 1902-1907), soared to $49,000 at an American Brilliant Cut Glass multi-estate auction conducted November 15.
?I know everybody is nervous about the economy right now, but this sale served as proof that high-end, quality items will still be desirable and do well, even in an uncertain time,? said Jason Woody of Woody Auction, based in Douglass, Ks. ?Most of the lots in this sale were outstanding pieces of American craftsmanship. This isn?t the first big ABCG auction we?ve held, and it won?t be the last.
Mr. Woody said around 140 people packed the Grand Ballroom of the Convention Center, while another 50 or so bidders participated online, via Proxibid. About 35 absentee bids were recorded. The Dorflinger tankard was by far the top lot of the sale. The piece had incredible color and an impeccable provenance. ?It was one of the best colored pieces it has ever been my privilege to sell,? Woody said.
Following are additional highlights from the sale. All prices quoted are hammer prices and do not reflect a sliding commission structure. There are no buyers? premiums at Woody Auction sales.
An extremely rare matching pair of 15-1/4-inch ABCG pedestal cornucopia vases with large, 24-point Hobstar bases, perfect stems and fully notched tails went to a determined bidder for $20,000. The vases featured a nailhead diamond, strawberry diamond and fan motif. One of the pieces had a minor side chip on the rim, but that didn?t affect the tooth height (and it didn?t dissuade eager bidders).
A 15-inch round charger cut in the perfect ?Panel? pattern by Hawkes, with a nearly 3/4-inch-thick blank, gaveled for $19,000. The item was received in shipment from overseas, where it had remained for the past 100 years. The original purchaser was pharmaceuticals magnate Sir Joseph Beecham. The consignor inherited it as part of a set in 1960. He took the pieces to France in 1975.
A flawless 10-inch signed Libbey ABCG round tray, in the rare ?Aztec? pattern, commanded $5,600, making it the sale?s fourth top lot. Fifth was a wonderful 9-inch-by-13-inch ABCG Tazza compote with a ?Panel? pattern by Hawkes and a huge, 32-point Hobstar scalloped base and sold stem ($4,500). Next, a 23-inch-by-12-inch table lamp in the ?Florence Star? pattern by Meriden hit $4,100.
A beautiful set comprising a 14-3/4-inch round ice cream tray with twelve matching six-inch dishes ? all well cut, with a bright blank, and resembling the work of J. Hoare ? fetched $4,000. Also, a perfect 9-inch amber cut to clear covered ginger jar with a diamond cut body with three panels of engraved garland and floral urn design ? probably cut by Hawkes on a Steuben blank ? earned $3,500.

“From Publishers Weekly: The wines of South Africa, Italy, Germany, China and dozens of other countries and regions are explored in Andre Domine’s gorgeous, gargantuan Wine. Incorporating a dizzying amount of information from a diagram of the olfactory mucosa to an exploration of proper vineyard soils, a discussion of the “Hades” method of wine maturation and recommendations about which white to have with oysters this tome is sure to please oenophiles and novices alike. And with more than 1,500 color illustrations detailed maps, vivid photographs of vineyards and snow-capped Alps by Armin Faber and Thomas Pothmann the book is as attractive as it is informative. From Library Journal: Both novice and experienced wine lovers will savor this lushly illustrated, gorgeously packaged introduction to the world of wine. After opening with a brief history of this intoxicating potable, it covers the basics on choosing, serving, tasting, and storing wine. Readers are then whisked into the vineyard to see how grapes are cultivated and into the winery to observe the bottling process. The book’s focus then shifts from an overview of its subject to a detailed look at 13 different wine-producing regions and countries. Coverage of each region or country includes a historical overview, detailed growing maps, production details and statistics, and a selection of wine producers with samples of their labels. The Oxford Companion to Wine (LJ 12/94) will still be the first choice for libraries needing a basic reference to this subject, but with its sleek visual look and abundant illustrations and photographs, this volume by Domine (who edited Culinaria France) will be a valuable counterpart to this standard source. Recommended for both academic and large public libraries. John Charles, Scottsdale P.L., AZ
